People report that they felt their house shake Thursday night
GREENWOOD, Maine —
On Thursday night, several folks in western Maine contacted 911 to report they believed there had been an explosion. It turned out to be a minor earthquake.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 2.3-magnitude earthquake at a depth of slightly over three miles was centered near Greenwood at 10:29 p.m.
No damage was reported, however, numerous residents of Greenwood and its surroundings said they felt trembling. Even eastern New Hampshire was affected by it.
Each year, a number of minor earthquakes with magnitudes under 3.0 occur in Maine.
Back in August, two little earthquakes jolted a portion of Downeast Maine.
The most powerful earthquake to strike Maine since 1997 was a magnitude 4.5 event that occurred in East Waterboro on October 16, 2012.
Over the past 25 years, Maine has seen a number of earthquakes of a magnitude of 5.0 or higher that were centered in Canada or New York.
Since 1997, more than 125 earthquakes have been felt or were centered in Maine, according to the state.
